Livestock Financing & Cattle Lending in Alberta
Feeder and breeder cattle financing for Alberta producers — from the foothills to the Peace. Local decisions made by people who have run cattle, and a protection plan on every financed animal.

Cattle lending built in Alberta, for Alberta
Foothills Livestock Co-op was founded in Rocky Mountain House in 1996 and Alberta has been our home market ever since. Our fieldmen live here, the approvals are made here, and the people deciding on your cattle have stood in the same auction rings you buy in.
How Cattle Lending Works in Alberta
Cattle-first lending with local, common-sense decisions.
Alberta runs more cattle than any other province in Canada, and the financing available to producers has not always kept pace with that. A general farm loan is written around land, equipment and a bank calendar. Livestock financing has to be written around cattle — when you buy, how long you hold, and when you market.
That is the whole basis of how Foothills lends. We finance the purchase of feeder and breeder cattle, structure the term around your actual marketing plan, and make the decision locally instead of sending it away to a credit committee that has never seen a pen of steers. For most Alberta producers the practical difference is measured in days rather than weeks — and in cattle buying, a week is often the difference between the pen you wanted and the pen that was left.
Every animal financed with us can be covered under the Foothills livestock protection plan, so a death loss on a financed animal does not have to land on your books as a straight loss. One relationship covers the lending and the protection together, which is simpler than assembling the two separately.
What We Finance Across Alberta
Three ways cattle lending puts capital to work on an Alberta operation.
Feeder Cattle Financing
Short-cycle financing to buy feeder cattle and background, grass or finish them, with the term timed to when you intend to market. Widely used by Alberta backgrounders and grassers.
Breeding Cattle Financing
Financing for bred heifers, young cows and cow-calf pairs, so you can build or hold the herd without draining the operating cash the rest of the ranch needs.
Cattle Loans & Operating Capital
Loan-style financing that frees up capital for cattle purchases and keeps your operating line available for feed, fuel, freight and wages.
Where We Work in Alberta
One office, fieldmen across the province.
Central & Foothills
Rocky Mountain House, Red Deer, Olds, Sundre, Rimbey and the surrounding country — our home ground, and where the office sits.
South & Southeast
Lethbridge, Medicine Hat, Brooks and the feedlot alley corridor, where feeder financing tends to move fastest and in the largest pens.
North & Peace
Edmonton north through Athabasca, Grande Prairie and the Peace, where longer hauls and a shorter grazing window change how a term should be written.
Why Alberta Producers Work With Foothills
Thirty years serving Western Canadian cattle producers.
Cattle People, Not Just Lenders
Our team has run and financed cattle for decades. You are talking to someone who knows what a bred heifer is worth this fall, not reading from a script.
Local, Fast Decisions
Approvals are made by people in Alberta who know the business, so you are not waiting on a distant office while the sale you wanted goes through.
Financing and Protection Together
Every financed animal can be covered under our protection plan — one relationship for the lending and the loss coverage.

Frequently Asked Questions
Straight answers for producers weighing their options.
How do I get livestock financing in Alberta?
Call the Foothills office in Rocky Mountain House or send a message through the contact page. A fieldman will go through your operation, what you are buying and when you plan to market, and set the financing around that. Because the decision is made locally, Alberta producers normally have an answer in days rather than weeks.
What is the difference between cattle lending and a regular farm loan?
A farm loan is generally written against land and equipment on a fixed schedule. Cattle lending is written against the cattle themselves and structured around when you buy and sell them. It is faster and more flexible for a livestock purchase, and financed cattle can also be covered by our protection plan.
Do you finance feeder cattle in Alberta?
Yes. Feeder cattle financing is one of our core programs and is used across Alberta by backgrounders, grassers and finishers. The term is set around your marketing plan rather than an arbitrary length.
Do you finance bred heifers and cow-calf pairs?
We do. Breeder financing covers bred heifers, young cows and cow-calf pairs so you can grow or hold your herd without tying up the working capital the rest of the operation needs.
Where in Alberta do you lend?
Across the province. The office is in Rocky Mountain House and our fieldmen cover central Alberta and the foothills, the south and feedlot alley, and north through the Peace country.
Is there insurance on cattle financed through Foothills?
Financed cattle can be covered under the Foothills livestock protection plan, which is designed so that a death loss on a financed animal does not become a straight loss on your books. It is arranged alongside the financing rather than separately.
